The Calder Quartet
Los Angeles, CA
A Los Angeles-based performing arts group, the Calder Quartet mixes traditional string quartet music with more modern and adventurous pieces. The Calder Quartet collaborates regularly with exciting artists from across the spectrum of musical genres including classical musicians and indie rockers.
This melding of the traditional and the unconventional has earned the Calder Quartet appearances on late-night television shows with some very well-known names such as David Letterman, Craig Ferguson, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, and Jay Leno. Notable collaborations include long-standing relationships with modern American Composers Christopher Rouse and Terry Riley who have written music for the Calder Quartet’s performances.
In 2010, the Calder Quartet premiered a new quartet written especially for them by Christopher Rouse at the International Festival of Arts & Ideas in New Haven, Connecticut. They also released an album of Christopher Rouse’s work called Transfiguration in 2010. The Calder Quartet is the Quartet-in-Residence at The Colburn School Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles. They perform regularly across the country, including a recent North American tour with singer-songwriter Andrew W.K. The Calder Quartet consists of Violinists Benjamin Jacobson and Andrew Bulbrook, Viola Player Jonathan Moerschel, and Cellist Eric Byers.
The Calder Quartet studied together at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music as well as at The Colburn School Conservatory of Music and The Juilliard School. The Calder Quartet also studied in Berlin at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. In 2004, the Calder Quartet co-founded an alternative classical music festival, the Carlsbad Music Festival, with Composer Matt McBane. Through the festival, the Calder Quartet provides musical outreach in San Diego and Los Angeles via performances in those two cities and a composers competition.
In 2010, they released their second album, Transfiguration, which featured music written especially for the Calder Quartet by American Composer Christopher Rouse. Rouse’s collaboration with the Calder Quartet marks the first time in more than 20 years that Christopher Rouse composed music specifically for any performer or group. The Calder Quartet also collaborates with the American minimalist Western classical Composer, Terry Riley.
The Calder Quartet shares their exciting take on string quartet music in venues across the country, including the Carlsbad Music Festival in San Diego and Los Angeles, a festival that the Calder Quartet co-founded with Composer Matt McBane. Other performances include the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the International Festival of Arts & Ideas in New Haven, Connecticut.
